Bird Names and Definitions
Dove
Dove is a bird with white color. It is a white-color pigeon and it is smaller as compared to other pigeons.
Crow
Crow can of white or dark black color. There are many species of crow and they have a loud disturbing voice.
Cormorant
Cormorants are large size birds with heavy weight. They are mostly black in color and has a long neck.
Peacock
Peacock is a beautiful animal with very beautiful colorful features. Peacocks can’t fly high. These birds have a friendly nature.
Quail

Ostrich

Parrot

Pigeons
Pigeons are grey or white colored birds with pink eyes. There is red spot on their neck near to the head, known as ‘caruncle’. They are between 25-30 cm in length.
Flamingo
Flamingos are large wading birds with long legs and necks. The upper part of their body is pink, but the lower parts are white. Flamingos live on lakes which have very little salt in them. Their beaks have a kind of ‘lamella’. The lamellae are used to filter tiny shrimps out of water.
Crow
Crows are big black birds. They have a strong beak, powerful legs and eyes surrounded by bristles. Crows live in groups near woods or places where there is much food available for them while they can easily find protection too. They are very clever birds.
Chicken
Chickens are the common domestic birds. These are kept as pets by many people. Chickens have a flat beak. Their feathers are of different colors, some have black and white stripes on their necks while others are red or yellow in color with black wings.
Duck
Ducks are web-footed birds that live near water. They have flat, broad beaks and are noisy birds. Ducks are of different colors like white, brown, black and red.
Seagull
Seagulls are the birds of oceans and seas. They have a strong, long and narrow beak with bristles on it. They live and travel in groups. Seagulls belong to the family of sea-eagle. Their feathers are mostly white, but can be green too.
Ostrich
Ostriches are the huge birds with long legs. They can easily run for 70 kilometers per hour. The male ostriches are black in color while females are of brown or grey hues. They have strong feet and toes which helps them to stand firmly on earth. Their heads are covered by skin having bristles on it, called ‘ossicones’.
Peacock
Peacocks are brightly colored birds with long tails. These are very popular for their large train-like tails. The peacock is the national bird of India. They have a crest on their head and neck, blue feet and strong beaks. Their size is around one meter in length while males are larger than females.
Penguin
Penguins are the birds of Antarctic. They have short legs and wings while they cannot fly. Penguins are slightly larger than ducks. The body of penguin is covered by stiff feathers which helps them to keep warm in Antarctica’s cold climate.
Eagle
Eagles are large birds with broad, long wings and a long tail too. Eagles belong to the family of hawks and falcons etc. They have a sharp and hooked beak. Eagles mostly eat fish while some of them eat snakes too.
Hummingbird
Hummingbirds are the tiny birds which move their wings up to 75 times in one second, making a humming sound while flying! Hummingbirds feed on nectar and insects for food. Their nests are made of soft materials like grass, feathers and spider’s silk.
Hawk
Hawks are the birds of prey with strong feet to hold their caught preys firmly. They have a sharp beak with notches on it. Hawks mainly eat rodents, rabbits, snakes etc.
Chicken Hawk
A chicken hawk is a type of a hawk which mainly preys on chickens and rodents.
Quail
Quails are the small birds with short wings and long back legs for running fast. Quails belong to the family of pheasant, partridge etc. Their feathers are mostly brown in color while some of them can be red too. The male quails have a crest on their heads while females are without it.
Owl
Owls are the birds of night with big round eyes, short tail and wings. Owls have soft feathers to fly silently in darkness. Their wings are broad and long which helps them to move quickly. Owls mostly eat small mammals like rats, rabbits etc.
Sparrow
Sparrows are the small birds which make loud chirping sounds. They have a pointed beak with bristles on it. Sparrows make their nests in holes or crevices of walls or trees to keep their eggs, young ones and themselves safe from other birds.
Starling
Starlings are the small black birds with short and pointed beaks. These birds look like the common mynah but they are larger than them in size. Their wings have a metallic green or blue sheen to it. Starlings live and travel in groups.
Goldfinch
Goldfinches are small yellow birds with black head and wings having white spots on them. Goldfinches are different from other finches because of their longer wings and tails. They are excellent singers with melodious voices. Goldfinches are the national birds of Netherlands.
Robin
Robins are small to medium sized songbirds having a thick bill for eating insects, earthworms etc. Robins have reddish brown feathers on them with black patches too. They live and breed in forests and gardens as well as near water bodies like lakes, ponds etc.
Blackbird
Blackbirds are mostly black colored birds with red beaks and legs. These birds feed on insects for food while some of them eat fruits too. Blackbirds build their nests in trees or bushes using soft materials like leaves and grass.
Sparrow Hawk
Sparrow hawks are large birds with broad and long wings and a sharp beak used to catch and eat sparrows and other small birds. Sparrow hawks mainly eat rodents, snakes and lizards for food.
Robin Red Breast
